Paramount Global has announced the cancellation of several events for 2025, including the MTV Europe Music Awards (MTV EMAs), amidst discussions about a potential buyout by Sundance.
According to media reports, the MTV EMAs will not take place in 2025, along with other awards shows such as the CMT Music Awards, the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards Mexico, and the MTV MIAWs, which have also been shelved this year.
In recent years, Paramount Africa had a partnership with the MTV EMAs. The awards have featured the category of Best Africa Act since 2005, which saw a temporary hiatus before being reinstated in 2010. This change stemmed from the creation of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs); however, financial constraints led to the MAMAs being cancelled and postponed indefinitely. Consequently, the Best Africa Act category returned to the MTV EMAs to ensure African representation.
Previously, Paramount Africa would send South African media representatives and influencers to the MTV EMAs, which rotated across various European countries. These attendees typically accompanied nominated artists from the continent, though their roles were generally limited.
In a recent memo, Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s music, talent, programming and events president, informed staff that the MTV EMAs and other events will not be part of the 2025 schedule. He stated, “We are pausing a few events for 2025 as we look to reimagine and optimise our events slate going forward,” which includes the MTV EMAs, MTV MIAWs, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards in Mexico, and CMT Music Awards.
Gillmer emphasised the importance of these events, saying, “Our world-class events are a key component of Paramount’s music offering as we continue to raise the bar in delivering iconic, unforgettable performances and moments that drive pop culture. We have the best team in the business, and we are grateful for your hard work and dedication in bringing these events to life.”
At last year’s MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, England, held in November 2024, South African artist Tyla took home three awards, including Best African Act, Best R&B, and Best Afrobeats.
