At the recently concluded 8th Broadcast And Digital Media Convention 2024, held in Swakopmund, Namibia, Mr Ralf Schimmel, Sales Director at LAWO AG, provided an in-depth look at the changing landscape of broadcasting technology. He focused on the shift from traditional hardware-centric systems to innovative IP-based networks and application-driven solutions.
LAWO, headquartered in Germany, boasts over 54 years of experience in live media production workflows, employing around 350 professionals globally. The company prides itself on developing cutting-edge technology within the realm of media production rather than engaging in content creation.
Some of the trends Mr SSchimmel highlighted included:
- Transition to IP Infrastructure: The broadcasting industry is witnessing a significant movement toward software-driven solutions, moving away from dedicated hardware systems. This shift, utilising standard servers and cloud technologies, results in greater cost efficiency, scalability, and flexibility.
- Emergence of Tech Titans: Major players like NVIDIA, AMD, Cisco, and Apple are entering the broadcasting arena. Their innovative approaches are prompting traditional manufacturers to adapt their offerings to embrace IP-based solutions.
- AI and Cloud Advancements: The integration of artificial intelligence and cloud computing, particularly through NVIDIA’s initiatives, is revolutionizing research and development and challenging established methods in the industry.
Mr Schimmel highlighted that the broadcasting sector’s future rests in separating hardware and software, emphasising the importance of remote, scalable, and cloud-based solutions. With its commitment to innovation, flexibility, and a customer-focused approach, LAWO is well-positioned as a leader in navigating the industry’s transformation.
