Currently, Kenya boasts a 60% penetration rate for 4G technology. Forecasts suggest that by 2027, the adoption rate for 5G could reach approximately 30%. As this transition progresses, enhancing user experiences for 4G and 5G remains a priority.
Maitai expressed, “In commercial deployment, we aim to utilise the 2.6 GHz and 3.5 GHz spectrums to optimise resources for low and medium-band users, enhancing the overall 4G experience. Concurrently, employing large bandwidth and LNR dual-use technologies will significantly upgrade the 5G user experience.”
Li pointed out four significant challenges that the rise of mobile AI will pose to the wireless communications landscape:
- Surge in AI Traffic: The rapid proliferation of AI devices—such as smartphones, vehicles, and robots—dramatically increases network traffic and data generation.
- Network Adaptation: To support AI, networks require lower latency, enhanced uplink speeds, and consistent coverage, necessitating transitioning from traditional downlink-focused systems.
- Business Model Transformation: The rise of AI-generated content will reshape traffic consumption patterns, opening new revenue avenues for network operators.
- Power Consumption: The energy demands of AI devices and infrastructure are significantly higher, highlighting the need for power efficiency.
So, how will Safaricom navigate these challenges?
Introducing AI will create multifaceted network demands, requiring uplink, downlink, and latency advancements. Addressing these needs will hinge on access to adequate spectrum resources, with Kenya utilising TDD spectrum and massive MIMO to enhance efficiency.
To ensure consistent improvements, deploying the 2.6 GHz spectrum in urban areas and the 3.5 GHz spectrum in high-demand locations will be pivotal for boosting network performance and user satisfaction.
On the other hand, AI’s influence on business models and network intelligence remains uncertain. Safaricom is poised to explore monetising user experiences and services while integrating 5G and cloud technologies.
How will Huawei’s solutions enhance Safaricom’s capabilities in the mobile AI age? Li summarised the strategy: “We focus on three key areas: All Bands in One, All Scenarios Seamless Coverage, and All Days Green.”
