YouTube Hikes Premium Subscription Prices in Nigeria by Over 50%.

YouTube has revealed a substantial hike in the cost of its premium subscription service in Nigeria. The price of the single plan increased by 54%, and the family plan increased by over 64%.

In an April 4, 2025, notification to Nigerian subscribers, the firm explained: “To continue bringing you amazing service and features, we’re increasing your price. We don’t make these decisions lightly, but this change will help us continue to improve YouTube Premium while continuing to pay the creators and artists you enjoy on YouTube.”

BMA has also learnt that the premium price increases on YouTube are affected in South Africa. Beginning in mid-2025, South African users will pay $4.50 monthly for the personal plan and $0.99 more for the family plan. YouTube Music subscribers will see their monthly subscription change from $3 to almost $4.

YouTube Premium, which removes ads and offers background play, continues to be a favourite. Early in 2024, the company announced that it had achieved 100 million paid members on YouTube Premium and YouTube Music—a 25% boost from 2022’s 80 million.

Launched in 2015 as YouTube Red and rebranded in 2018, the service has introduced many features, including improved 1080p HD streaming, cross-device playback capability, podcast support, and AI-driven features available only to Premium subscribers.

While the increases surprise some, YouTube insists the changes are necessary to enhance service quality and continue to support content creators worldwide.
