The Nigerian creative industry has experienced significant growth in the past decade, establishing itself as a major cultural force with global influence. From Nollywood’s impact to the rise of Afrobeats, Nigeria has become a hub for exporting talent and stories worldwide.

This growth has extended into new frontiers, with animation emerging as a key area of innovation. Despite being in its early stages, the local animation industry is riding the wave of this creative renaissance. Similar to the success of Nigeria’s music and film industries in telling authentic African stories, animators are drawing from indigenous folklore, history, and culture to create compelling narratives through 2D and 3D animation.

These animators are not only providing entertainment but also preserving cultural identity. They are reimagining how African stories are told on a global stage, contributing to the overall growth of the creative sector. Nigerian animation is poised to become a cultural export, spreading the essence of Africa through visually captivating and culturally resonant projects.

At the forefront of this movement are the pioneering founders of animation studios dedicated to breaking into the international market and creating content that reflects Nigerian heritage for children and global audiences.

Niyi Akinmolayan, the Founder and Creative Director of Anthill Studios, has been a driving force in Nigeria’s entertainment industry for over 15 years. In 2022, Anthill Studios secured a groundbreaking deal with Amazon Prime Video, marking a significant milestone for Nigerian animation. Their ambitious project, Mikolo, with its substantial production budget, aims to revolutionize the African animation landscape.

Roye Okupe, the founder of YouNeek Studios, is another prominent figure in the African animation industry. His work includes creating diverse superheroes and animated stories rooted in African culture, history, and mythology. His critically acclaimed works have garnered international recognition and acclaim.

Johnson Mbuotidem, the CEO, Producer, and Director at Basement Animation, is a key player in the Nigerian animation industry and a member of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. His studio specializes in kids and family entertainment and digital 2D and 3D animation services.

Damilola Solesi of SMID Animation Studios is another visionary in the industry, focused on creating animated stories that celebrate African culture, history, and mythology.

These pioneers, along with other talented individuals and studios, are reshaping the landscape of Nigerian animation and are set to significantly impact the global stage.
