Renowned British actor Idris Elba has called on African filmmakers to prioritize producing high-quality content that meets global standards. In a recent interview, Elba emphasized the power of leveraging technological advancements to create professional-grade films, allowing African cinema to compete on the international stage. This highlights the transformative power of innovation in the industry.

Speaking to Channel One, Elba highlighted the need for African filmmakers to captivate local audiences before seeking international acclaim. “We have to think about our local market—by local, I don’t just mean Ghana, but Nigeria, West Africa, South Africa—because people love movies across Africa. While it’s important to appeal to global markets, we must succeed at home first,” he said.

Elba’s message is clear and empowering. He urges African creatives to focus on the quality of their productions, noting that with the democratization of filmmaking tools, there’s no excuse for subpar films. “We have access to high-quality cameras and professional audio equipment, so there’s no reason we can’t produce world-class films. Attention to quality is crucial,” he added, inspiring filmmakers to strive for excellence in their work.

Elba is currently in Ghana, attending the second edition of the Africa Cinema Summit, a significant event held from October 7 to October 10 at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra. The summit, organized by the National Film Authority, is a beacon of hope for the African cinema industry. It aims to foster collaboration, drive innovation, and promote sustainable growth, underlining the importance of such platforms for the industry.

As the film industry in Africa continues to evolve, Elba’s message underscores the potential for the continent’s filmmakers to succeed locally and leave a significant mark on the global stage by producing high-quality content that speaks to a diverse audience.
