The bustling city of Johannesburg played host to the 5th edition of the highly anticipated Radio and Digital Sound Broadcasting Summit at The Venue, Green Park. This premier event, bringing together industry leaders, innovators, and professionals, set the stage for a series of insightful discussions and networking opportunities.

Hosted by Broadcast Media Africa, in collaboration with the Southern Africa Broadcasting Association (SABA), the day began with a warm welcome from the summit organisers, who deeply acknowledged the pivotal role of the attendees in shaping the future of radio and digital sound broadcasting. The opening remarks from Mr Stanely Similo, President, underscored the summit’s mission to foster collaboration, innovation, and growth, with the understanding that it is the collective efforts of the industry, including the esteemed attendees, that drive its success.

One of the day’s most memorable sessions featured Davies Kabuswe, the Executive President of Sun FM. Renowned for his innovative approach to broadcasting, Kabuswe shared truly unique and thought-provoking insights on the transformative power of radio in reaching and engaging diverse audiences. His address highlighted the strategic initiatives Sun FM has implemented to adapt to the digital age, with a focus on the integration of digital platforms to enhance listener experience and broaden reach.

Edmund Fianko, the Acting Director of Engineering at the National Communications Authority (NCA) in Ghana, captivated the audience with his technical expertise and forward-thinking approach. Fianko’s presentation delved into the technological advancements driving the future of African radio broadcasting. He discussed the critical role of regulatory frameworks in fostering innovation and ensuring the seamless transition to digital sound broadcasting. His insights provided a comprehensive overview of the industry’s technical challenges and opportunities, making it a highly informative session for all attendees.

Wrapping up the day’s key speakers was Noto Modungwa, the Business Development Manager at Sentech. Modungwa’s session delved into the strategic growth initiatives undertaken by Sentech to expand its broadcasting infrastructure and services. He strongly underscored the importance of collaboration between public and private sectors, emphasising that through such partnerships, the industry’s growth can be accelerated, and widespread access to high-quality broadcasting can be ensured.

The summit continues today with more sessions and speakers, promising further insights and opportunities for collaboration.
