As part of the ongoing industry programme on “Preserve Africa’s Sound and Audio-Visual Assets”, Broadcast Media Africa hosted a one-day online forum on “Risks And Disaster Safeguarding For Audio-Visual Archives In Africa” on Thursday, 7 October 2021.
The industry forum was developed resulting from a recent industry survey by Broadcast Media Africa. The survey outcomes reflected that many archivists in the continent were not fully aware of what it takes to safeguard archives from potential risks and disasters. The survey also revealed that a good number of archivists were not versatile in knowing that adequate building and collection security, fire and flood alarms, access controls are all elements to reduce the loss or expensive damages to archives.
Emanating from the aforementioned, Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), in partnership with Apricity Consulting, convened an expertise exchange forum focusing on “How We Did It! Mitigation And Preventative Measures For Safeguarding Audio-Visual Archives Disaster Effects”.
The exchange covered:
Unpacking effective disaster preparation strategies and processes
Procedures and policies required to implement long-term disaster preparedness successfully
Understanding the causes of deterioration and preservation methods
Assessing plans for collection safeguarding, post-crisis recovery, and risk reduction
Business continuity strategies during a disruption
