DStv has announced that the Afrikaans film channel fliekNET will no longer be offered as a permanent channel on the platform. As of 15 July 2022, the channel will be switched back to a pop-up channel.
FliekNet originally launched as a holiday pop-up channel in 2014, broadcasting Afrikaans Films during the December holidays, until DStv switched it to a permanent offering for DStv Premium subscribers in September 2020.
The channel airs feature-length films, 50-minute short films, and documentaries from MultiChoice’s archive of Afrikaans content.
In December 2020, MultiChoice launched a 50-minute film project to create more content for fliekNET. The initiative saw the creation of more than 80 Afrikaans short films that were aired on fliekNET over the last 18 months.
According to the pay-TV operator, new Afrikaans films will premiere on DStv’s main Afrikaans channel — kykNET — every Saturday once fliekNET is shut down.
MultiChoice said, “channel and content offerings are evaluated regularly to provide good entertainment for our viewers while limiting repeats.”
The pay-TV operator also said it would continue to produce new Afrikaans short films and has begun developing and producing 90-minute films that will start airing in 2023.
The broadcaster also mentioned that it would add kykNET movies to Showmax from 16 July 2022.
