The South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs) are returning to the small screen in an exclusive hybrid simulcast show which will air on SABC 3 (S3) and Mzansi Magic on the 22nd of May 2021 at 18h30 (SAST). Following last year’s YouTube and other social media platform broadcast, the 15th annual SAFTA awards packaging is a first in history for the show.
Entrusted to deliver an exceptional hybrid show is Idols SA finale and Miss SA producer Anneke de Ridder. In a released statement, de Ridder shared plans for the annual event stating that due to the COVID pandemic, the containment of the spread of the virus remained critical. Therefore, the team decided to keep production at a minimum, simultaneously providing an entertaining show for audiences. Furthermore, the production team has found a solution to integrate nominees and presenters virtually, which is a first for SAFTAs, added de Ridder.
The 2021 packaging presents another new element for the show: the “at home” red carpet moments that will form part of the official show. De Ridder encouraged viewers at home to join in on the fun as some of the home red carpet moments will appear on virtual red-carpet snippets.
Pat Van Heerden, the Head of S3 Bouquet, said that the channel is thrilled to have partnered with the SAFTAs for this year’s show. The partnership with the National Film and Video Foundation is essential because of the shared mandate in developing the film and television industry, said Van Heerden.
Multichoice Group CEO for General Entertainment And Connected Video, Yolisa Phahle, encouraged the pay-tv subscribers to tune in on the 22nd of May in support of taking African stories to the world.
