According to industry experts, archive access and monetisation have been met with vast hurdles due to uncertainties relating to Intellectual Property (IP) rights. These limitations often block institutions from exploiting the actual value of the cultural heritage, which can only be achieved by providing much-needed access.
Furthermore, restrictions surrounding the distribution and monetisation of materials, especially for educational purposes, has been noted as the fundamental block to libraries fulfilling practical preservation of materials.
Therefore, as part of the ongoing Industry Programme on #PreserveAfricaArchives, Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), collaborating with Apricity Consulting, will host the first 2022 industry discussion on “Archives Access And Exploitation: Dealing With Rights And IP Restrictions” this Thursday, February 10, at 11h00 GMT on the Zoom platform.
The conference’s goal is to assist industry role players with the best possible steps that will help in the management of collection access, monetisation and IP rights.
Industry practitioners can expect to learn practical methods such as:
(i) management of databases and library volumes
(ii) how libraries can manage copyrights and ownership issues when monetising content
(iii) factors involved in copyright registration, duration, assigning, and the types of statutory IP protection
(iv) strategies and methods for adopting policies and procedures to ensure adequate care and handling of AV materials whilst providing complete access
