AfroSport Television, a broadcaster of AFCON 2021 in Nigeria, announced that it reached over 60 million viewers during the competition’s group and 16 round stages.
The broadcaster believed it had achieved this in collaboration with Nigeria’s terrestrial television networks: Nigerian Television Authority, Silverbird Television, AIT and AfroSport TV channel 730.
The company noted the slight drop in viewership after Nigeria was eliminated in the 16th round. Nevertheless, the Nigerian football audience quickly forgot about the pain of losing their favourite team. Viewership picked up again in the semi-final stage with the Egypt vs Cameroon match, with viewership expected to reach 65 million and an estimated 3 million free streams on its Vidivu OTT platform during the final game on February 6th.
According to AfroSport TV, collaboration and partnership remain the bedrock for reaching the milestones. “through the dedication, passion, focus, and ambition of its people; as well as the collaboration of broadcast partners – NTA, AIT, and STV, a network of private and state/regional broadcasters, the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) digital platform – Free TV, and of course the support of Flutterwave, our esteemed sponsor of the broadcast of all 52 live matches of the AFCON competition.”
