In Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved a new bill for the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) passed by the National Assembly.
The new bill abolishes the Advertising Practitioners (Registration, etc.) Act, Cap. A7, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and enacts the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act, 2022.
According to media reports, the legislation makes provisions for the regulation and control of advertising, ensures the protection of the general public and consumers, promotes local content, and entrenches best international practices.
In a statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (House of Representatives), Nasir Illa, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria Act, 2022, was listed alongside seven other bills that were to be approved.
It is also worth noting that last week, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, ARCON, announced a ban on the use of foreign voice-over artists and models in advertisements with effect from October 1, 2022.
