MTN Nigeria has confirmed that it will roll out 5G networks by 24 August 2022. The telecom operator revealed this at the 90th edition of the telecom consumer parliament, organised by the Nigerian Communications Commission in Logos.
When the NCC handed over the final letters of award in March 2022 for 5G spectrum licences to winners of the 3.5GHz spectrum auctions, it charged them to roll out services in August 2022.
While declaring open the consumer parliament, themed: “5G Technology: Opportunities and Challenges,” the Executive Vice Chairman of the Commission, Prof Umar Danbatta, stressed the mandate and said the winners, MTN and Mafab Communication, are expected to fast-track the deployment of 5G network that will lead the country into a more robust Fourth Industrial Revolution and a digitised economy.
Danbatta further stated that “in line with the provisions of the 5G license, licensees are expected to begin roll out of 5G services effective from August 24, 2022”.
He further highlighted that Industry collaboration is essential to the successful deployment of 5G Services in Nigeria and urged industry players to work hand-in-hand with the Commission to explore the prospects and potentials of the new technology.
Representative of MTN, Chinedu Ezeigweneme, indicated that the operator had put in place plans and is currently working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth rollout of the network.
“We have put all plans in place. We have discussed with relevant stakeholders, and I can confirm that by August 24, 2022, MTN will roll out 5G services,” He said.
Although the other spectrum winner, MAFAB Communications, could not give such assurances, the NCC was optimistic that both winners would comply with the rollout timeline, having both agreed to the license conditions.
