According to media reports, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is breaking box office records across Africa.
Opening in theatres on November 11, 2022, the Marvel Studios Super Hero blockbuster has earned the biggest opening weekend of all time in West Africa.
It is reported that Ryan Coogler’s 2018 hit ‘Black Panther’ drew audiences with just under 300k attendances in Africa. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ is making African box office history within a few days in theatres.
The film became the most significant industry opening weekend of all time, with a box office tally of US$540 613 in West Africa. In addition, the film earned US$203 583 in Kenya, earning the titles of both the biggest opening weekend box office of 2022 and the biggest post-pandemic opening in East Africa.
In Southern Africa, the blockbuster brought in US$953 691, becoming the biggest opening weekend box office of 2022. The original 2018 movie ‘Black Panther’ remains the number 1 film of all time in East and West Africa and the number 2 film of all time in Southern Africa.
Before the release, the filmmakers and cast from Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever recently flocked to Lagos, making history as the first official African Marvel Studios premiere in Nigeria.
Director Ryan Coogler, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta Mejía and local musicians featured in the film joined dignitaries and guests at the black carpet premiere event on Sunday, 6 November 2022.
South Africa also hosted the Southern African Premiere of the film on 9 November, welcoming Connie Chiume (Mining Tribe Elder “Zawavari”), Dr Ernest Khalema (Language and Cultural Consultant on the film) and local artists from the soundtrack.
The film follows Queen Ramonda, Shuri, M’Baku, Okoye and the Dora Milaje as they fight to protect their nation from intervening world powers in the wake of King T’Challa’s death.
