Mpho Ngoepe is a professor and the Director of School of Arts at the University of South Africa
(Unisa). In 2022 academic year, he acted as a deputy executive dean for the college of human
sciences at Unisa. Prior to his current position at Unisa, he worked for the United Nations
Children’s Fund, Auditor-General South Africa, and the National Archives of South Africa, to
mention just a few organisations. He also served in the national committee of the South African
Society of Archivists (2009-2022) and the board of Eastern and Southern Regional Branch of the
International Council on Archives (2009-2019). He also served on the advisory council of the
National Archives of South Africa in his capacity as the chairperson of Gauteng Provincial
Archives (2015-2020). He was the director of the African Team for the multi-national,
interdisciplinary research project exploring issues concerning digital records called the
International Research on Permanent Authentic Records in Electronic Systems (InterPARES
Trust) (2013-2018). He was recently appointed to serve in the provincial archives advisory
council of Limpopo Province from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2025. Ngoepe has published widely
in archives, records management, audiovisual, oral history, auditing, library, and corporate
governance. He is the 2004 IVAISLIP/SABINET Information Officer of the year. In 2007 he
was recognized by the South African Human Rights Commission and the Open Democracy
Advice Center for implementation of the Promotion of Access to Information Act at the Auditor-
General South Africa. He is the 2015 Unisa Information Science alumnus of the year. In 2020,
he was awarded a Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence in Research, a coveted bi-annual prize that is
given to outstanding and deserving active UNISA researchers.
