Under the #PreserveAfricaArchive (PAA) Industry Programme, Broadcast Media Africa (BMA), in collaboration with Apricity Consulting and several industry partners, will be convening the international Audio-visual Archiving and Preservation Summit – Africa 2023 with the aim of putting the spotlight on the preservation of Africa’s audiovisual heritage.
Recent industry surveys conducted by BMA confirm an urgent need for legacy audiovisual content – still primarily stored in analogue formats – to be carefully digitised, diligently catalogued, archived and preserved. Yet, there is no “one size fits all” preservation strategy for audiovisual materials, as different content owners, users, and custodians have different requirements regarding audiovisual materials.
Taking place from Wednesday, 7th – Thursday, 8th June 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa – the high-profile industry summit will provide an unparalleled opportunity for archivists practitioners, preservation professionals, curators, content creators, scholars and enthusiasts from across Africa and the world to explore current successes and issues, challenges and opportunities concerning Africa’s audiovisual heritage.
According to Mr Benjamin Pius and Ms Ilse Assmann, who are the convenors of the conference, this industry event will enable participants to network, learn and critically review the technologies and systems and review innovative ideas for achieving cost-effective digitisation and preservation of African audiovisual heritage.
Participants will get a clear view of the issues relating to the effectiveness of archives management in the digital ecosystem.
