BMA has learnt that MultiChoice is teaming up with Rapid Blue to develop an Afrikaans version of the popular comedy series The Office in South Africa. The show is set to premiere in 2025 as a Showmax Original and will also be broadcast on kykNET.
This adaptation will mark the 14th version of the mockumentary sitcom globally. MultiChoice has previous experience with this format through kykNET’s long-running show Hotel and the recent series Pronk Primêr, which drew comparisons to Abbott Elementary.
Details about the Afrikaans version’s title and the initial episode order have yet to be disclosed, as Showmax declined to provide further information.
Nicola van Niekerk, M-Net’s head of premium content and co-productions, expressed her excitement about this new project, which is a partnership with Ricky Gervais.
The adaptation process will involve recruiting local talent for the writing team, ensuring the show reflects South Africa’s cultural nuances and authenticity. Ziyanda Ngcaba, the managing director of Rapid Blue, expressed pride in producing the first African version of The Office for Showmax and kykNET.
The original British version of The Office, created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, has previously been successfully adapted in other countries, including the United States and Australia. This new adaptation aims to capture the essence of the original while infusing it with the unique humour and characteristics of the Afrikaans language and culture.
