eMedia’s free streaming service, eVOD, has experienced a significant surge in registrations, attracting nearly 300,000 new sign-ups since June 2023, according to the broadcaster’s 2024 annual report.
With total registrations reaching 1.13 million as of March 31, 2024, eVOD is being hailed as the “Netflix of South Africa.” The platform has not only seen significant growth in watch time, recording 1.3 billion minutes in 2023/24 but also boasts a diverse library of original local content, which is a key factor in its rapidly increasing popularity.
In addition to its success with eVOD, eMedia has also achieved significant milestones with its satellite TV service, Openview. Notably, Openview’s revenue has surpassed US$32 million, reflecting its rising popularity and effectiveness in reaching a broader audience. With nearly 378,000 set-top box activations in the past financial year and a total of over 3.4 million active Openview decoders, the platform’s growth is clear.
eMedia’s recent launch of the new OV512 decoder for the Openview satellite TV service, priced at US$43.65, is a testament to the company’s commitment to enhancing user experience.
This decoder, equipped with a built-in Wi-Fi receiver, offers access to a wide range of online content, including international and local movies and series, further elevating the viewing experience for its users.
Moreover, eMedia’s future plans to expand support for eVOD to more smart TVs and introduce new content for users with the new Openview 512 set-top boxes mirror the company’s dedication to staying at the forefront of the OTT and streaming industry.
