Bolane Austin-Peters’ Nollywood biopic “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” secured the second position at the Nigerian box office following its release on May 17, 2024, as per the statistics provided by the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigerian (CEAN).
CEAN released a report on the top 10 films exhibited in Nigeria, detailing the box office performance of each film from May 24, 2024, to May 30, 2024.
According to CEAN, “Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti” earned a total of US$30,891.59 in its opening week and US$28,489.65 in the second week, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood film during that period. Currently, the film has accumulated US$59,447.95 at the box office.
The movie narrates the life of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, the mother of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, from her pioneering years as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her marriage with Israel Ransome-Kuti. The cast includes Omowunmi Dada, Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, Adunni Ade, Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Iremide Adeoye.
“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a Hollywood film, entered the box office last week and clinched the top spot with a weekly gross and total gross of US$38,230.84.
The comedy-drama film “Ajosepo,” which held the number one spot for a month, garnered US$33,627 in its first five days of release (April 10 to April 14). It currently stands at number five with a weekly total of US$7,739 and has collected a total of US$160,129.
The Yoruba epic film Blacksmith: Alagbede, which secured third place after earning US$7,539 in its opening weekend, has now dropped to number eight with a weekly total of US$2,668. Currently, the movie has grossed US$40,232.
