In 2023, DStv saw a decrease in the number of channels added and removed, with the broadcaster adding two new channels and removing one. In contrast, DStv added seven channels and removed four in 2022.
However, the broadcaster made changes to its channel offerings for certain customers by giving DStv Compact and Access customers access to ESPN sports channels that were previously only available to higher-tier subscriptions.
When asked about its plans for launching new channels, DStv did not confirm or deny whether it had slowed channel acquisitions, stating that it would communicate changes as they happen. DStv regularly reviews its channels to ensure it provides customers with the best content, and in this instance, it removed the CCTV-4 channel due to low viewership and performance on some packages.
Despite going quiet on new channel offerings, DStv launched a new kids’ channel called Play Room in November 2023. The channel airs local South African education and entertainment programming and popular international content. It is available on DStv’s Access package and higher subscriptions.
In late November 2023, DStv announced that it would add ESPN 1 to its entry-level Access package due to its regular reviews of viewership trends. DStv also added NWTV to its catalogue, offering customers access to content specific to the North West province and other notable coverage from Southern Africa.
