According to the most recent PressPulse rankings, MultiChoice and Showmax have surpassed competitors like Spotify, Disney+, and Netflix in overall online media sentiment.
PressPulse is a specialised online media-sentiment tracking platform that has created a unique artificial intelligence (AI) system for measuring sentiment. Utilising advanced natural language processing and deep learning techniques, it provides precise sentiment analysis.
Focusing specifically on South African business news from top-tier publications, the platform evaluates how well companies achieve favourable exposure in the media. The sentiment rankings are determined by the quantity of positive, neutral, or negative articles published, along with the reach and influence of the respective media outlets.
In simpler terms, companies with more positive articles tend to have better sentiment rankings. The system also considers the reach of each article, providing each company with a sentiment score that reflects its media performance. A positive score indicates favourable exposure, while a negative score suggests the opposite. The magnitude of the score illustrates the impact of the exposure; for instance, a large positive score suggests significant positive coverage.
In the latest sentiment analysis focused on South Africa’s entertainment sector, MultiChoice emerged at the top with a remarkable sentiment score of 39. Over the past month, the company received coverage from 25 positive articles, 14 neutral ones, and only one negative piece. This strong performance highlights the effectiveness of MultiChoice’s marketing and communications strategies in generating favourable media exposure.
Showmax, which is predominantly owned by MultiChoice, also fared well, achieving a sentiment score of 14. During the same period, the streaming platform garnered 14 positive articles and three neutral pieces, with no negative coverage.
In stark contrast, Netflix reported a negative sentiment score of -3, influenced by several negative articles in highly regarded publications, significantly affecting its ranking.
