The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) is gearing up for the Uganda Film Festival (UFF) gala on June 6, marking the event’s 12th edition. With a record number of nominees across 27 categories, the Festival highlights Uganda’s impressive growth in the film industry while sparking important discussions about its artistic direction.

Launched on April 14, this year’s nominations reflect a diverse pool of talent from various regions, with over 362 film entries and participation from more than 330 filmmakers. Julianne Mweheire, UCC’s director for Economic Regulations, praised the filmmakers’ growing confidence and innovative storytelling. UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo noted the collaborative efforts driving industry progress and emphasised the need for a sustainable audience.

The gala will culminate in a rigorous judging process, where expert panels will announce winners from a standout list of nominees. “Kimote” by Hassan Mageye and “Nkinzi” directed by Rehema Nanfuka, lead with 14 nominations each, followed by notable films like “Fatal,” “Speak,” and “Two Paths.” Young nominees Kisakye Passion and Myra Ariana Lubowa are recognised for their roles in “Nkinzi.”

Despite the industry’s advancements, head judge Philip Luswata urged filmmakers to delve deeper into authentic Ugandan narratives. He advocated showcasing the unique “colour of Uganda” in their stories, pushing beyond technical mastery to enrich their content. As the gala approaches, the UFF serves as a celebration of achievements and a platform for vital dialogue regarding Uganda’s evolving cinematic landscape.
