Ethiopia: New Streaming Showcases Local Filmmaking Talent

Meet Ethiopian KITFO TV, the brand-new streaming platform that puts Ethiopian and Eritrean filmmakers front and centre where they belong.

Long sidelined in the global movie scene, creatives from these regions finally have a space built by them. KITFO TV’s launch isn’t just another tech announcement — it’s a movement. Alongside the platform’s debut, KITFO rolled out a crowdfunding drive and kicked off KITFO Conversations, a bold new series sparking real talk about the issues and dreams shaping East African storytelling today.

Before the official launch, KITFO already made waves with a three-day film festival in Los Angeles in collaboration with American Cinematheque and boosted by ARRAY. The buzz didn’t stop there: an Addis Ababa edition, hosted with Prestige Addis and backed by the U.S. Embassy, pulled in over 400 film lovers — proof that the hunger for authentic stories from the Horn of Africa is real and growing fast.

Founder Denkinesh Argaw drives it all, and her vision is crystal clear: “KITFO is about ownership, access, and visibility. ” She says, “We’re not just a platform—we’re a home for our stories to be respected and celebrated worldwide.”

Ethiopian and Eritrean cinema have battled uphill for years, with limited resources, political hurdles, and often the wrong kind of spotlight. However, these communities have always been rich in culture, languages, and tradition. KITFO TV flips the script, letting creators tell their stories their way, free from outdated narratives.

On the platform, expect a dynamic mix of beloved Ethio-cinema classics, fresh indie gems from the diaspora, and everything in between. KITFO isn’t just about watching films; it’s about building a global bridge for East African voices.

And it doesn’t stop at streaming. KITFO TV is all-in on nurturing the next wave of talent. They’re partnering with local partners to offer workshops, mentorships, and creative boot camps. Because real change doesn’t just happen on-screen—it starts behind the camera.
