Nigeria: MTN Launches Product To Accelerate The Country’s Broadband Reach

MTN Nigeria has rebranded its fibre broadband service, unveiling FibreX, a refreshed and modernised offering that redefines high-speed internet access nationwide. This move signifies a strategic push by the telecommunications giant to enhance connectivity and reinforce its position in Nigeria’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Previously known as MTN Fibre Broadband, the newly rebranded FibreX represents a name change and an invitation to a strategic shift towards providing faster, more stable, and user-centric internet services. Tailored to meet the rising demand for high-speed connectivity, FibreX will enable seamless streaming, rapid downloads, and reliable video conferencing and support smart home technology integration.

This relaunch is crucial as Nigeria aims to achieve 70% broadband penetration by 2025, aligning with the National Broadband Plan (NBP). The NBP sets a minimum target speed of 25 Mbps in urban areas and 10 Mbps in rural regions, making robust infrastructure and service delivery a national priority.

“Our goal is simple — better internet for everyone,” stated Egerton Idehen, Chief Broadband Officer at MTN Nigeria. “FibreX is part of our mission to connect more people, bridge the digital divide, and accelerate Nigeria’s digital transformation.”

This initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s broader effort to expand the nation’s fibre-optic network. A planned rollout of 90,000 additional kilometres of fibre is expected to boost the country’s total network from 35,000 km to 125,000 km, significantly enhancing nationwide access.

Beyond the technical upgrades, FibreX is also crafted with user experience in mind. The rebranding aims to make the service more approachable and memorable for consumers while reflecting a modern, digital-first identity. According to MTN, the new name highlights the brand’s intent to lead discussions around what premium internet connectivity should feel like.

Whether for remote work, content streaming, online learning, or digital entrepreneurship, MTN asserts that FibreX is designed to support the evolving needs of Nigeria’s increasingly connected population.
