Nigerian filmmaker Roye Okupe has introduced a groundbreaking animated series titled ‘Iyanu: Child of Wonder’, drawing inspiration from Yoruba mythology and created as a source of inspiration for his daughter. This innovative series is set to premiere on Cartoon Network and Max, showcasing an entirely Nigerian voice cast and emphasising the importance of African narratives in the global media landscape.

‘Iyanu: Child of Wonder’ is an animated series and a graphic novel that aims to provide young audiences worldwide with a positive role model deeply rooted in African culture. The story follows a young orphan who learns about her extraordinary abilities to fight against evil forces, effectively merging superhero elements with authentic Yoruba traditions.

The launch of this series marks a significant milestone for the Black-owned studio Lion Forge Animation. Lion Forge CEO Dave Steward II has hailed it as a breakthrough in African storytelling, highlighting its unique cultural specificity that is often overshadowed by more prevalent European mythologies in the entertainment industry. Voice actor Sam Kugbiyi also noted the project’s historic significance for representation, celebrating its rich African roots.
