MTN Zambia has partnered with Huawei to introduce a cutting-edge antenna system to boost the country’s network performance and energy efficiency. The new technology, the Meta-Active Antenna Unit (Meta-AAU), represents a significant advancement in 5G capabilities. According to Techtrends Zambia, this third-generation antenna is designed to offer a wider coverage area and increased bandwidth while operating more efficiently than traditional antenna systems.
MTN and Huawei emphasise that the Meta-AAU addresses key challenges faced by MTN, including limited space for installing equipment on towers and high operational costs related to system deployment. This innovative solution also tackles several technical hurdles, such as integrating high-density large antenna arrays, coordinating dual-band scheduling, enabling remote adjustments, and implementing advanced energy-saving modes. As a result, it ensures a seamless 5G experience in various environments.
MTN Zambia’s Chief Technology Officer Thomas Ngoma stated that this initiative is pivotal to achieving 5.5G, the next progression in 5G technology. “This collaboration is a crucial step in our journey towards 5.5G. Huawei’s dual-band AAU technology not only improves our current network capabilities but also paves the way for future advancements in 5.5G,” he stated.
Robin Yu Bin, Director of Huawei’s Southern Africa Multi-country Management Department, highlighted the importance of leveraging technology for infrastructure development. “The successful implementation of this solution showcases its feasibility and commercial potential. Huawei remains committed to utilising its 5G expertise to assist MTN in building a sustainable and intelligent network infrastructure,” he added. This partnership underlines a shared commitment to enhancing connectivity in Zambia and sets the stage for the region’s future of mobile communication technology.
