Broadcast Media Africa has learnt that the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) has launched its first satellite, Al Ain Sat-1, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s space exploration journey.

Developed by the Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS) in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the satellite was launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, with its first signal received by the UAEU ground station.

Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh, Cultural Advisor to His Highness the UAE President and Chancellor of UAEU, described the launch as a historic achievement for the university and a testament to the tireless efforts of its researchers and experts. He emphasised that the success reflects the UAE’s vision of leadership in scientific research and space sciences, strengthening its global role in space exploration and innovation.

He added: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the task force behind this success and wish them continued progress in completing the mission and achieving its objectives. With its innovative design and advanced technical capabilities, “Al Ain Sat-1″ will significantly enhance our capacity for remote sensing and provide precise data to support sustainable development initiatives across various sectors of the nation.”

The Al Ain Sat-1 project highlights the pivotal role of the National Space Science and Technology Center (NSSTC) in advancing space initiatives and fostering collaboration between academia and the space industry. The 3U CubeSat, measuring 10 cm x 10 cm x 30 cm and weighing 3.7 kg, operates in low Earth orbit and is equipped with advanced remote sensing technologies.

The initiative also seeks to empower student teams from local and international universities to participate in developing small satellites, promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration. This hands-on experience aims to inspire and equip students and researchers with the skills necessary to contribute to the growing space sector.

The Al Ain Sat-1 programme exemplifies the UAE’s commitment to innovation, education, and technological advancement, serving as a cornerstone for future projects that bridge academic research and practical applications in space exploration.
