MTN, Africa’s leading telecommunications provider with over 290 million subscribers, has launched Cloudplay, an innovative cloud gaming service developed in partnership with Telecoming, a sports technology firm specialising in digital entertainment. This launch marks a significant step towards enhancing gaming accessibility and highlights MTN’s continuous commitment to innovation.
MTN Cloudplay enables users to stream various games directly to their devices without downloading or dedicated gaming consoles. Utilising MTN’s speedy 5G network, the service makes gaming more accessible by delivering smooth, high-quality play experiences on mobile phones, tablets, and other devices.
For a monthly fee of US$4.37, subscribers can access over 340 games, ranging from beloved retro classics such as Contra and Pac-Man to contemporary hits like Hogwarts Legacy and Borderlands 3. Additionally, users with Steam accounts can transfer their existing game licenses to the platform, providing a unique blend of convenience and personalisation.
Cloud gaming, commonly known as “gaming on demand,” is changing the gaming landscape worldwide. By eliminating the need for costly consoles and high-performance PCs, it makes gaming accessible to a broader audience. With MTN Cloudplay, South Africa is paving the way in the African gaming sphere.
Jason Probert, MTN South Africa’s General Manager for Digital Services, emphasised Cloudplay’s transformative benefits: “The introduction of 5G technology allows users to stream and play games without requiring a PC or console. We’re dedicated to enabling our customers to experience the advantages of a modern, connected lifestyle.”
This initiative supports MTN’s vision to spearhead Africa’s digital transformation while promoting digital inclusivity.
Telecoming’s played a crucial role in developing this service. With nearly ten years of experience in African markets, the company views this partnership as a strategy to enhance digital entertainment opportunities in the region. According to Alí Karaosman, MEA Director of Telecoming:
“We believe that MTN Cloudplay will change how users in South Africa engage with video games.”
The launch of Cloudplay underscores MTN’s dedication to developing Africa’s gaming ecosystem. South Africa is already experiencing a surge in gaming adoption, fueled by enhanced connectivity and accessible digital platforms. This service positions MTN at the forefront of Africa’s emergence as a significant player in the global gaming market.
MTN Cloudplay is set to foster innovation in gaming. It’s trying to appeal to casual gamers and dedicated enthusiasts alike. As the gaming landscape evolves, MTN’s service could be a benchmark for other African markets adopting similar technologies.
