As audiences continue to shift away from traditional broadcast channels, the OTT landscape has exploded, with sports being a key driver of this growth. However, as promising as the digital sports streaming sector is, it also presents unique challenges, especially in terms of managing rights and distribution.

The 5th Edition of the OTT Streaming Africa Summit, set for 18-19 February 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa, will dive into one of the most dynamic sectors of digital media: live streaming, particularly for sports content.

Live sports broadcasting has long been a stronghold of linear TV networks, with their ability to capture large, real-time audiences. However, the rapid rise of OTT platforms is increasingly disrupting this model. Sports fans now expect content to be available on demand, on multiple devices, and at any time. This demand has led sports organisations and broadcasters to rethink their strategies and seek flexible distribution models.

OTT platforms provide a unique opportunity for more direct fan engagement, including personalised experiences, enhanced interactivity, and global reach. Yet, transitioning sports content to OTT involves complexities surrounding rights acquisition, distribution agreements, and maintaining the integrity of live sports events.

Commenting on this, Mr Benjamin Pius, CEO of Broadcast Media Africa, said, “As the African continent embraces digital transformation, the OTT sports market offers enormous growth potential. Major leagues and tournaments, both local and international, are looking to tap into Africa’s passionate fan base, with OTT platforms providing a gateway to reach millions of viewers across the continent.”

The 5th OTT Streaming Africa Summit will provide a platform to discuss these emerging trends, offering insights from industry experts, rights holders, broadcasters, and technology providers on navigating the complexities of sports content distribution in an ever-evolving digital environment.
