Airtel Malawi is set to bid farewell to its long-serving managing director, Charles Kamoto, who will take on the same at Airtel Tanzania from November 1, 2024.

Kamoto has worked at Airtel Malawi for ten years, rising from chief commercial officer 2014 to managing director in 2016.

Dr Ngeyi Ruth Kanyongolo, the chairperson of Airtel Malawi’s board of directors, made the announcement this week when she lauded Kamoto’s contribution to the company’s remarkable success and growth.

“His leadership has been pivotal in driving the company’s growth and success. We express our deepest appreciation for his vision, dedication, and outstanding contributions to Airtel Malawi plc,” said Kanyongolo.

The respected telecoms executive is credited with leading Airtel Malawi’s listing on the Malawi Stock Exchange and driving profits, among other significant achievements.

“His tenure at Airtel Malawi plc has been marked by numerous achievements, including driving exceptional profitable growth in both Customer Market Share and Revenue Market Share and significantly increasing shareholder value,” Dr Kanyongolo noted.

The Airtel Malawi reshuffle will also see finance director Abdul Khayyum Shaik take over from Kamoto as managing director on an interim basis until a substantive appointment is made.

“We are confident in Mr. Shaik’s ability to lead the company during this transition period, ensuring continuity and stability,” Dr. Kanyongolo said.

Shaik is equally an experienced executive with 20 years of experience in the telecoms industry.

He began his career at Bharti Airtel as a -finance executive and has steadily advanced through various senior positions. Before assuming the role of finance director in Malawi, he served as the head of market operations for the Mobile Business at Bharti Airtel.

Airtel Malawi has reassured its customers, shareholders, and partners of its commitment to delivering exceptional service and value.

The company stated, “Our robust leadership team and strategic direction will ensure that we continue to build on the strong foundation laid by Mr. Kamoto.”

It emphasised that the fourth largest telecoms firm in Malawi, which provides prepaid and post-paid mobile services and 4G products, stays committed to its purpose of service excellence.
