Nigeria’s National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (NCAIR) has introduced a US$100 million fund to support start-ups utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to create innovative solutions within the country.
Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communication Innovation and Digital Economy, revealed the initiative in conjunction with Google during the U.S.-Nigeria Global Inclusivity and AI: Africa conference. Tijani emphasized the significance of the AI Fund in fostering local innovation to address societal challenges and contribute to economic development in Nigeria.
Google’s West Africa director, Olumide Balogun, highlighted the company’s dedication to enhancing digital skills across Africa and expressed support for the AI Fund as part of this broader commitment.
Dr. Bunmi Ajala, the National Coordinator of NCAIR, emphasized that Google’s collaboration with Nigeria aligns with its goal of advancing the country’s technological landscape.
The AI Fund aims to equip entrepreneurs with the necessary resources to develop impactful AI solutions. Selected start-ups will have the opportunity to receive up to $6,000 (N10 million) in funding, along with access to Google’s extensive resources, including AI technologies, mentorship, and a global network to aid in scaling their innovations.
The application process for the fund commenced on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, and will close on September 25, 2024.
