The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has recently reported that Nigeria has achieved a high ranking of 71% in legal, policy, and governance frameworks in preparation for the deployment of 5G technology. This places Nigeria among the top seven African countries in terms of 5G readiness.

The report, titled “Collaborative Regulation: Accelerating Nigeria’s Digital Transformation,” was presented at the Digital Economy Complex in Abuja. The event was attended by key industry stakeholders, government agencies, and representatives from various institutions.

Dr Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, expressed the government’s commitment to using the report as a guide to achieving regulatory objectives and policies for a robust digital economy.

This commitment aligns with the evolving role of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which has transformed from solely regulating the telecommunications sector to laying the foundation for a prosperous economy.

Dr Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, highlighted the importance of collaborative regulation in facilitating Nigeria’s transition towards effective digital governance and agile regulation in the nation’s digital economy. He emphasised that effective regulation not only ensures compliance but also attracts greater investment and promotes broader digital inclusion, thereby fostering a more robust digital economy.

The report recognises Nigeria’s efforts to advance its digital infrastructure and regulatory environment, positioning it for further technological growth and development.
