Zimbabwe’s Regulatory Authority Approves Starlink’s Entry Into The Country’s Telecommunications Sector

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) has granted a license to Starlink, allowing the company to operate in the country’s digital telecommunications space.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa welcomed this development, emphasizing the potential for high-speed, cost-effective internet infrastructure deployment, particularly in rural areas. He also highlighted the alignment of Starlink’s investment with Zimbabwe’s commitment to being open for business and encouraging foreign investment.

Starlink’s services in Zimbabwe will be delivered through a strategic partnership with IMC Communications (Pvt) Ltd, a local player in the telecommunications sector. Mnangagwa praised this collaboration, highlighting its role in propelling the country’s digital and communications technology landscape forward.

This approval marks a significant shift, as Zimbabweans had previously faced challenges accessing Starlink services due to government restrictions. The recent approval paves the way for Starlink to officially operate in the country, addressing the demand for its services.

In contrast, the situation in South Africa differs, with no expected rollout date for Starlink’s services due to regulatory hurdles related to ownership rules for telecom licensees. SpaceX’s ownership structure and the regulatory framework in South Africa present obstacles to Starlink’s entry into the market.

As Starlink prepares to expand its services in Zimbabwe, the approved licensing signifies a positive step towards enhancing connectivity and digital infrastructure in the country.
