SABC+, the streaming platform launched by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) in 2021, has been experiencing remarkable success. Following the decision to remove the requirement for login credentials in December 2023, SABC+ has been able to attract a growing audience, with approximately 4.6 million unique views recorded from 1-20 June 2024.
SABC+ operates on an advertising-funded video-on-demand (AVOD) business model, allowing users to access its content for free while viewing ads. The platform has seen significant improvement in user experience and viewership since login details were removed.
Although SABC+ faced technical challenges during the Rugby World Cup in 2023, it has since reinforced its infrastructure and network connectivity. The seamless streaming of over a million views per match during the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year demonstrates the platform’s resilience and improved performance, reflecting the successful resolution of past challenges.
SABC+ is not limited to South African viewers; it is also accessible to audiences outside the country. However, certain content is geographically restricted due to regulations and content rights. The platform’s availability has further expanded with the launch of Freevision Play by Sentech, a state-owned entity, which has sparked competition in the streaming industry.
Experts have emphasized the importance of strategic investments in the development and marketing of SABC+, recognizing its growth potential. A former SABC executive, Michael Markovitz, highlighted the need for additional investment while expressing optimism about the platform’s progress.
To facilitate its expansion and technical advancement, SABC has collaborated with Mangomolo, a leading streaming platform developer based in the United Arab Emirates. Mangomolo, known for managing over a billion streams monthly and serving millions of viewers worldwide, aims to enhance SABC+ by leveraging its advanced technology.
Wissam Sabbagh, founder and CEO at Mangomolo, expressed enthusiasm for their collaboration with SABC, emphasizing the opportunity to deliver innovative OTT video experiences in South Africa. He also highlighted their commitment to providing a seamless viewing experience for audiences across diverse smart devices, thus supporting broadcasters in expanding their viewership and engaging with audiences effectively.
