Radio Broadcasters Summit To Evaluate The Uptake of Digital Sound Broadcasting In Africa

As the Radio and Digital Sound Broadcasting Summit approaches, set to take place at The Venue, Green Park in Johannesburg, South Africa, from June 18-19, 2024, organisers have confirmed that attendees will explore the current state of DSB in Africa and what the market readiness looks like.

The digital revolution has enhanced sound quality, diversified content, and opened up new avenues for interactive engagement. In Africa, where traditional FM/AM radio still holds sway, the transition to digital sound broadcasting (DSB) presents a golden opportunity to redefine how audio content is consumed.

Africa’s broadcasting landscape is a diverse mix of traditional radio stations, burgeoning internet-based platforms, and satellite services. While digital sound broadcasting technologies like Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB/DAB+) and Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) have made inroads, the continent’s adoption has been relatively slow. A key reason for this is the significant investment required in infrastructure, equipment, and training.

“The forthcoming Radio and Digital Sound Broadcasting Summit in Johannesburg is pivotal for the continent’s broadcasting landscape. It is a catalyst for change, providing a platform for stakeholders to address challenges, share insights, and pave the way for broader adoption. This summit heralds a new era of digital sound broadcasting in Africa.” says Mr Benjamin Similo (President of Southern Africa Broadcasting Association and DG Namibia Broadcasting Corporation), who is also the event co-convener.

The Radio and Digital Sound Broadcasting Summit in Johannesburg is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for industry stakeholders, regulators, broadcasters, and technology providers to unite and shape the future of DSB in Africa.
