At the recently concluded industry summit on OTT Streaming Platforms And Content Management in Cape Town, South Africa, Gary Shaw (CEO of Pan African Holdings) shared some insights and key lessons they learnt from providing OTT streaming services and platforms in Africa.
Shaw’s first lesson emphasises the importance of understanding the devices accessing the OTT platform. He underscores the necessity of having a script in place to detect the type of device users are accessing the platform with.
The second lesson delves into the critical consideration of operating systems concerning price points. Shaw stresses the significance of offering high-quality content at affordable prices, citing the availability of smartphones priced as low as US$70. This revelation underscores the necessity of aligning price points with the economic realities of the African market.
Lastly, Shaw’s lesson revolves around the importance of content localisation and negotiation prowess. He accentuates the need for content accessible in local languages to effectively cater to diverse audiences.
Central to Shaw’s discourse is the overarching theme of balancing quality, affordability, and content diversity. He emphasises the need for OTT platforms to offer a compelling value proposition to subscribers while navigating the complexities of content acquisition and pricing.
