Nollywood film The Weekend, directed by Daniel Oriahi, has been selected for the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, a platform for independent filmmakers. The festival is scheduled to run from June 5 to 16, 2024, in New York City. Oriahi announced the selection of his film on his Instagram page on Thursday, April 18, 2014, expressing his excitement for the film to be featured in the festival.
Oriahi’s filmmaking journey began with his debut film, “Misfit,” a psychological horror made on a shoestring budget. In the Instagram post, he shared his experience making the film and how he met the executives of Trino Studios. Following the success of “Sylvia” in 2018, he decided to explore various horror sub-genres, drawing inspiration from classics like “Rosemary’s Baby,” “The Shining,” and “Hereditary.”
“The Weekend” was presented to him by the executive director of Trino Studios, Uche Okocha, in 2022, and he said it aligned with his creative vision. He expressed gratitude to Trino Studios and all collaborators for their support and belief in him.
The film is a drama thriller that follows an orphan girl who visits her fiancée’s seemingly idyllic family and discovers a sinister secret. The cast includes Aniunoh, Bucci Franklin, Meg Otanwa, Keppy Ekpeyong Bassey, Gloria Anozie-Young, and Damilola Ogunsi.
