Niger Telecoms has launched a sweeping initiative to bolster its network reach across the country, prioritising underserved rural areas. On July 1st, the state-run telecommunications firm announced the activation of 16 new sites in Niger’s Maradi region, marking a significant stride in its expansion efforts.

According to a company statement, this project phase involves the meticulous deployment of advanced equipment, including the setup and fine-tuning of transmission hardware and communication devices. Such preparations are crucial to swiftly operationalise the new sites, ensuring prompt benefits for local communities, particularly villagers gaining newfound access to essential mobile telephony services.

This move comes at a time when only 38.2% of Niger’s vast territory enjoys telecom coverage, serving 78% of the population, as per regulatory data. Niger Telecoms, the longstanding operator in the region, currently blankets 51.8% of the country’s geography and caters to approximately 59.9% of its inhabitants. Mobile penetration is 65%, with internet access extending to 32% of the populace.

With its ambitious national network expansion program, Niger Telecoms aims to connect thousands more individuals and bolster its competitive edge, particularly in the mobile sector. As of the close of 2023, official statistics positioned the state-owned company as the fourth-largest player, boasting 1.02 million subscribers and capturing a 6% market share. Meanwhile, competitors Airtel, Zamani Telecom, and Moov Africa commanded 46%, 30%, and 18% of the national mobile telephony market.
