MultiChoice Nigeria and M-Net have announced the return of Big Brother Naija for its 9th season, set to air from 28th July. Unlike previous seasons, contestants, known as housemates, will enter the house in pairs. However, only one winner will ultimately claim the reduced prize of US$61,184.08, down from the previous US$73420.90, sparking discussions due to the decreased value caused by inflation and currency devaluation in Nigeria.

The 71-day reality show will be broadcast on MultiChoice’s DStv across Africa, with the debut airing on all Africa Magic channels. Despite the unique pairings, the familiar elements of drama, emotion, and intriguing twists, including challenges and parties, will be maintained. Notably, the head of the house challenge will be replaced with an array of surprises from Big Brother.

Busola Tejumola, MultiChoice’s head of content and West Africa channels, highlighted the innovative format and promised a fresh and compelling experience for viewers. While the show promises entertainment for a broad African audience, the decision to reduce the prize money has left many pondering, as MultiChoice has not provided a clear explanation for the reduction.

Moreover, MultiChoice Nigeria’s decision to cancel the reunion episode for the 8th season of Big Brother Naija, scheduled for 24th June, has surprised many, as they did not provide any reasons for this unexpected change. Additionally, Showmax will feature The Buzz, a highlight recap show hosted by Toke Makinwa, offering audiences additional content from the reality show.

Despite these developments, MultiChoice Nigeria’s communication on these matters has been primarily focused on the local Nigerian media, raising questions for fans and audiences across the African continent about the changes and decisions surrounding the popular reality show.
