Kenya has strengthened its digital transformation agenda through a renewed collaboration with South Korea as part of the third phase of the Economic Innovation Partnership Programme (EIPP). The partnership with the Korea Trade Investment Promotion Agency aims to develop Konza Technopolis, which is Kenya’s Silicon Valley.
Konza Technopolis is a massive technology hub constructed 64 kilometres south of Nairobi and marketed by the government as a crucial component of its Kenya Vision 2030 development strategy.
The third year of EIPP is expected to support the establishment of a stable infrastructure, smart farms, green transition, energy independence, and an integrated information and transportation network.
Kenya’s partnership with Korea has benefited several sectors, including ICT, infrastructure development, healthcare, water, and education. EIPP has established smart city development, the Konza Digital Media City, and the Kenya Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), putting Kenya on the path to a knowledge economy.
The Kenyan government has digitized government services, with Kenyans now having access to over 5,000 government services online via an improved e-Citizen platform that was recently launched. This platform has improved service delivery and eliminated inefficiency, corruption, waste, and prejudice, ensuring that formerly underprivileged communities are no longer denied access to government services.
Since assuming office, President William Ruto has emphasized technology as the key to boosting efficiency, increasing inclusivity, and fostering openness and honesty in Kenya. The country’s effort to expand its ICT sector has increased in recent months, with a budget of US$109.6 million allocated for ICT-related initiatives in the financial year 2023/2024.
Kenya has implemented several steps to ensure the growth of its digital economy, including the national ICT policy, the Kenya Start-Up Act, the Data Protection Act, the Digital Economy Blueprint, and the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act. These steps will help the country establish itself as an ICT innovation hub and realize the digital economy’s full potential.
