In preparation for the forthcoming Broadcast and Digital Media Convention – East Africa, on 7 – 8 May 2024 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, BMA interviewed LAWO AG’s Senior Sales Director, Mr Ralf Schimmel.
During the conversation, Mr Schimmel highlighted that the African broadcast media landscape is trained in innovation – some driven by LAWO AG – and the region’s market is ready to thrive and succeed.
Below is an abstract from our conversation with Mr Ralf Schimmel.
BMA: What influenced your decision to agree to participate in the forthcoming Broadcasters Convention For East Africa?
Ralf: The East African broadcast market is very fit and trained in innovation and always seeks better solutions, Lawo is driving innovation; whether it is 8k production, new loudness features for radio, or no more monitors with mixed reality products, the broadcast market is very innovative and always seeks for better solutions, Lawo is driving innovation, if it is 8k production, new loudness features for radio, no more monitors with mixed reality products.
BMA: What innovation and new ideas would you like to see as Broadcasters in Africa deploy digital ecosystems?
Ralf:
– Multi-language stations in networks across the countries.
– Smart community radio station based on IP.
– More program output on different platforms with less technology
BMA: What are the biggest challenge(s) faced by Africa’s broadcast media players today, and how do you see them being resolved and overcome?
Ralf:
– Getting fast Internet, like 10 to 50GBit/sec for live coverage, to reduce OB VAN and satellite costs.
– Telco providers have the network platform and can easily make paid content and “steal” it away from the classic broadcaster, cooperation is key.
– To reduce the cost of making content by sharing resources and using scale-based systems.
