From Our Experience: “Content Monetisation and Distribution Challenges in Nigeria’s Film Industry” – By Victoria Ogar Of FilmOne Entertainment

At the recently concluded Broadcast Media Africa’s OTT Streaming Platforms And Content Management Summit, which took place on 27 – 28 Feb 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa, Victoria Ogar of FilmOne Entertainment, highlighted how content creators in Nigeria face a myriad of challenges when it comes to monetisation and distribution.

According to Ms Ogar, for many Nigerian filmmakers, the cinema remains the primary distribution channel for their films. With its widespread reach and ability to attract large audiences, the cinema provides an unparalleled viewing experience for moviegoers. However, a film’s success in cinemas often depends on its genre and target audience. While blockbuster action films may thrive in this environment, niche genres may need help finding a foothold.

Ms Ogar further noted that the rise of digital streaming platforms has transformed the distribution landscape. Platforms like Netflix allow filmmakers to reach a global audience and generate revenue through subscription-based models.

To overcome distribution challenges in Nigeria’s film industry, filmmakers must carefully consider where their films should go. Rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, filmmakers should assess their films’ unique characteristics and target the distribution channels that best align with their goals and target audience. Building strong relationships with distributors, leveraging digital platforms like YouTube, and exploring alternative distribution channels such as streaming platforms are all essential strategies for success.
