Elon Musk’s social platform X is expanding its reach into the entertainment industry with the launch of a TV app which will enable users to access video and entertainment content. While the release date for the platform is yet to be confirmed, X has stated that it will be available soon on most smart TVs. The app will also allow users to cast video content from their smartphones onto larger TV screens, making it more compatible with other devices and operating systems.
To boost its video offering, X has formed several high-profile partnerships to bring more professionally produced video content to the service. However, one such agreement with former CNN anchor Don Lemon for an exclusive show fell apart after Lemon interviewed Musk on camera.
Musk has been pushing the social platform, formerly known as Twitter, to move beyond its text and image-based format to become more of an “everything app”. This shift from its original format has been driven partly by the need to find new revenue streams and differentiate the platform. Musk has previously cited YouTube and LinkedIn as targets for X.
The company has stated that it plans to monetize the platform and is exploring different forms of partnerships, which may include ads. X has revealed that users have watched over 23 billion minutes of video on the platform in the last 30 days.
