The government of Ghana recently announced that media outlets in the country will receive support to produce high-quality content.
During a meeting with representatives from DW Akademie, a leading German organisation for international media development, in Accra, the Ghanaian Minister for information disclosed that her ministry has initiated a three-year process to establish an office for the International Fund for Public Interest Media (IFPIM) in the country to assist media outlets in accessing bursary assistance for their work. Furthermore, the Minister stated that the IFPIM Ghana Office will officially open next month.
Acknowledging the economic challenges faced by the media in recent times, the authorities in Ghana emphasised that IFPIM’s support would boost the work of journalists, particularly as the nation prepares for this year’s general election. Additionally, the Ghanaian government will extend diplomatic courtesies to IFPIM so that it can operate freely in the country.
The Minister also commended DW for supporting Ghanaian media development over the years. According to the Minister, Ghana has over 700 registered radio stations, with 550 active, as well as over 100 active television stations on Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) systems.
The leader of the DW team, Natascha Schwanke, noted that the visit was to deepen collaboration between the organisation and the Information Ministry as DW was committed to media development. She added that since 2013, DW had focused on media development in Ghana.
